You probably got all the information about the program when you went to International Studies, but let us just remind you about a few things. The program runs spring semester, usually starting in the first week of February and ending around May 28. You will receive 18 credits for the program. Students enroll in classes depending on their preparation. Usually all classes are taught in German and count toward a German minor or major. The program fee pays for your housing in a host family, your travel to and from Germany, your courses, theater and musical events, and all program excursions. (Last year we spent five days in Berlin, visited Munich and Dachau, toured the glacial valley of the Altmühltal, as well as several other excursions.) The cost for the program this year is $6,900. If you're worried about the expense, it really is only slightly more than staying here in St. Cloud. Don't let the cost stand in your way--stop and see Tom at International Studies about the possibility of financial aid. Many students who do not normally qualify for financial aid are able to receive it for study abroad. St. Cloud State's Ingolstadt program is nationally known as the most cost-effective and "best deal" for study abroad. There will never be a better time to go overseas, or a more affordable way to do it while earning 18 college credits.
A few other teasers: A new university (the Fachhochschule) opened in Ingolstadt last year. Our students met with students there, forged new friendships, and got the use the university's computers to do their e-mail. You can keep in touch with friends at home while making new ones abroad. We have also entered a collaborative agreement with the Fachhochschule and are exploring how our students will be able to take courses there in connection with our program. So, there are lots of new initiatives for this dynamic program.
We are accepting applications through September 20, 1998. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 320-2554790 or the Department of Foreign Languages at 255-4141.
Looking forward to working with you in Ingolstadt!
Professor Shawn C. Jarvis and Professor Isolde Mueller directed the program 1998. They can give you detailed information about the 1999 schedule.
Students arrive at Munich Airport in the first week of February. The director picks them up and arranges for seven to ten days stays in the Ingolstadt Youth Hostel. The members have an opportunity to get to know the other group members, explore the city on foot, and visit the "Bermuda Triangle", just 500 yards from the Hotel Anker in the Tränktorstrasse. The first weekend is spent sightseeing and exploring. On the first Monday in Ingolstadt, students meet at the designated school building (this changes from year to year) downtown Ingolstadt.
Classes will meet in the same building for the length of the program. It's usually only 5 minutes walking distance from the Rathausplatz and the school features its own bus stops, of course. Buses are the main mode of transporation for SCSU students in Ingolstadt. We hand out bus passes that allow you to ride any bus at any scheduled time to anywhere. If students have host families outside of Ingolstadt, and most do, they will "bus in" and ride the local buses to get around. You receive the bus passes when school begins. From your youth hostel, located in a three hundred year old fortification outside the former city wall, walk through the Kreuztor and straight ahead via Theresienstrasse to Am Stein. Take a right, walk by the Rathausplatz, Spitalstrasse 8, where the director lives, and across the Adenauer Brücke to the Berufsschule.
You will find it strenuous at first to listen to German and even Bavarian all the time, and try to respond appropriately. The only remedies are patience, sleep, and excellent study habits. You will find the first week most memorable, no doubt!
Ingolstadt's main train station is the starting point for many excursions and trips. Students are discussing their trip to Eichstätt, to visit the University of Eichstätt, the baroque churches, and the art studio of Ernst Arnold Bauer who teaches Art History for the SCSU Ingolstadt Program.
